The objective of the The Lift and Escalator Symposium Educational Trust to advance education in lifts and escalator and related technologies. The Trust is supported by The University of Northampton, the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) and LEIA.
The University of Northampton is situated in the heart of England and offers various subjects at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The Lift Engineering programme includes postgraduate courses at the MSc/ MPhil/ PhD levels that involve a study of the advanced principles and philosophy underlying Lift and Escalator Technologies, and aims to provide a detailed, academic study of engineering and related management issues, for persons employed in lift making and allied industries. At the undergraduate level the Foundation Degree and HNC in Lift Engineering as well as the BTEC Professional Diploma in Engineering (Lift Technology) courses have been introduced.
The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) is the professional body that exists to support the Science, Art and Practice of building services engineering. The CIBSE Lifts Group is a specialist forum for members who have an interest in vertical transportation. The group meets regularly to promote technical standards, training and education, publications and various aspects of the vertical transportation industry. The CIBSE Lifts Group directs the development of CIBSE Guide D: Transportation systems in buildings, the de facto reference on vertical transportation.
LEIA is the UK trade association and advisory body for the lift and escalator industry with a membership covering some 95% of the lift and escalator industry. LEIA members supply passenger and goods/service lifts, stairlifts, homelifts, lifting platforms, escalators, passenger conveyors and a range of component parts for such products. LEIA members undertake the maintenance and modernisation of more than 250,000 products falling within the scope of the Association. LEIA provides advice on health, safety and standards matters, promotes education and training especially through its distinctive distance learning programme so is proud to be a co-organiser of the Symposium.
